8 Major Side Effects of Eating Too Many Clementines
Clementine or tangor is a citrus fruit with a smooth glossy appearance and deep orange color. It is a hybrid between the willow leaf mandarin orange and the sweet orange. They are sweet and juicy and are less acidic than orange. Clementine provides many health and beauty benefits due to the abundance of essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, polyphenols, and dietary fibers, etc. Eat clementines in moderation as there are some side effects of eating too many clementines.
Side Effects of Eating Too Many Clementines
Some major side effects of eating too many clementines are as follows.
(1) May Cause Teeth Problems
The citric acid in clementines may break down the tooth enamel, and increases the risk of oral problems like cavities, gum diseases, and bad breath, etc.
Eat clementines in moderation to avoid the risk.
(2) May Increases The Risk of Acid Reflux
Clementines contain citric acid, and eating too many clementines may increase the risk of acid reflux.
Acid reflux is a painful condition in which the stomach’s content moves upwards towards the esophagus, and causes a burning sensation in the throat, and chest. Acid reflux damages the lining of the esophagus, and increases the risk of ulcers and bleeding in the digestive tract.
(3) Too Much Dietary Fiber Is Bad For Stomach
Dietary fiber in clementines improves our digestive health. They are natural laxatives that improve bowel movement and relieve constipation and other digestive problems like abdominal pain, gas, bloating, and flatulence, etc.
However, too much dietary fiber may damage our digestive health. They over-stimulate bowel movement and may cause diarrhea, constipation, intestinal gas, intestinal bloating, indigestion, and malabsorption, etc.
Eat clementines in moderation to avoid this risk.
(4) Too Many Antioxidants Are Bad For Our Health
Vitamin C, vitamin A, and other antioxidantal compounds in clementines protect our cells from free radical damage and reduces the risk of several cancers.
Free radicals are unstabilized ions that stabilize by stealing electrons from neighboring molecules, and doing so causes oxidative damage to them.
At healthy levels, antioxidants only target the free radicals, but in excessive quantity, they may target the healthy cells around them, and increase the risk of many cancer(s).
As per a 2011 study involving 35,500 men, high levels of vitamin E may increase prostate cancer risk by 17 percent.
According to a study by the National Cancer Institute, smokers who took high doses of beta-carotene supplements were at higher risk of lung cancer in comparison to smokers who didn’t.
As per a study by the Office of dietary supplements, high doses of vitamin E increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.
Eat clementines in moderation to avoid the risk.
If you are already taking the antioxidant supplement, consult with your doctor before adding clementines to your diet.
(5) May Develop Allergic Reactions In Some Individuals
In some individuals, clementines may cause allergic reactions such as itching, burning sensation in the mouth, swelling of mouth, tongue, and lips, etc.
If you are allergic to other citrus fruit such as orange, grapefruit, Pomelo, and, mandarin orange, etc, then you are likely to be allergic to clementines.
Avoid clementines if you are allergic to clementines or have a citrus fruit allergy.
Immediately consult a doctor if you experience any allergic reaction after eating clementines.
(6) Clementines And High Blood Pressure
Hypertension is a silent killer that affects millions around the world and is a leading cause of several cardiovascular problems.
Clementines regulate high blood pressure as the potassium in them is a natural vasodilator that relaxes blood vessels and improves blood circulation.
Despite this benefit, eat clementines in moderation as a high potassium level may drop blood pressure below the normal level, and cause symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, nausea, depression, blurry vision, etc.
If you are already on blood pressure medication, consult with your doctor before adding clementines to your diet to avoid food-drug intolerance risk.
(7) Clementines And Blood Sugar
Because of its low glycemic index, clementine slows down sugar release into the bloodstream. It prevents a sudden spike in blood sugar levels and helps in managing diabetes.
Dietary fibers in clementines reduce sugar absorption by the bloodstream and regulate blood sugar levels.
However, eating too many clementines may drop blood sugar below the normal level, and give rise to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, fainting, excessive hunger, and excessive sweating, etc.
Eat clementines in moderation to avoid the risk.
If you take diabetic medication, consult with your doctor before adding clementines to your diet to avoid food-drug intolerance risk.
(8) Eating Clementines During Pregnancy And Nursing Stage
Clementines are loaded with essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and dietary fibers, etc.
These nutrients play an important role in maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
Vitamin C, vitamin A, and other antioxidant compounds protect the fetus from free radical damage.
Folic acid in clementine promotes the brain development of the fetus and reduces the risk of neural tube defects like spina bifida.
Clementine regulates blood sugar levels and reduces the risk of gestational diabetes.
Despite these benefits, consult with your doctor before eating clementines during pregnancy to ensure there is food-drug intolerance or complication involved.
Nursing mothers should also follow the same precaution, and consult their doctor.
