In medical terms bunions are called Hallux Valgus.Bunions form when the bone or tissue at the joint at the bottom of the big toe moves out of place. Basically, it happens due to increased pressure on the big toe of the foot which causes it to move in the outward direction. Bunions are formed due to the pressure on the feet that’s why people with bunions feel severe pain and their joint becomes stiff and sore.

Bunion Treatment Surgical and non surgical methods

Bunions mostly run in families, but not necessarily because some people develop bunions due to shoes which badly fit or may be due to walking a lot and putting more pressure on their feet. Also for maximum benefit from footwear, you should use

While talking about the treatment of the bunions there are two options, either surgery or the non-surgical treatment. Mostly the non-surgical treatments are preferred by the people because they are both affordable as well as convenient.

(1) Non-Surgical Treatment

The non-surgical treatment revolves around pain-killers, bunion pads, orthotics, and wearing suitable foot wears. Let’s talk about these one by one:

(2) Pain-Killers

Over the counter painkillers are mostly used for the pain associated with bunions for example Paracetamol or ibuprofen.

(3) Bunion Pads

Gel or fleece pads are mostly used for this purpose and they are reusable.Bunion pads stop your foot rubbing on your shoe and relieve the pressure over the enlarged joint at the base of your big toe.

(4) Orthotics

Orthotics is used to realign the bones of feet. Best fitting of orthotics are necessarily important for best results. Orthotics are easily available on the pharmacies over the counter and they can be made on order that is they can be customized. Splints are another thing to use for your bunions and they are available separately for day and night time use but the evidence for their affectivity is little.

(5) Ice Packs

Ice pack is also a very effective technique for the relief of pain. Nowadays cold treatment and warm treatment both are suggested for the relief of pain and sore. For using ice pack never use it directly on your skin, use some towel or piece of cloth for using ice pack, it will relieve the sore pain of your bunion.

(6) Suitable Footwear

For bunions wider shoes are recommended. Shoes such as those made from soft leather are highly appreciated in bunions to reduce the pressure on feet. High heel shoes can make the condition worsen by exerting too much pressure on the feet. So the high heels or shoes with narrower front or the slip on shoes are strictly prohibited for the people with bunions.

(7) Surgery

As the bunions get worsen with time so surgery is the best treatment in this condition, because leaving bunion un-checked in this situation makes it horribly painful. Surgery is carried out to treat the severe pain of bunions, and the surgery is a short one. After surgery you may be prohibited from wearing certain kind of shoes for the betterment of you feet.

For surgery there are some specifications or you can say some limitations or conditions which have to be considered before performing surgery, which include age of the person, severity of the symptoms or condition of the bunions, lifestyle of the person that is his occupation and medical history or general health. There are different types of surgeries to be performed for the bunions which are following:

  • Osteotomy
  • Arthrodesis
  • Excision Artroplasty

This is the most common type of surgery performed for the bunions, in which cutting and removal of the toe bone is performed.During surgery surgeon removes the bony lump and realign the bones inside big toe. Toe joint is moved back in line, involving removal of other pieces of bone, from the neighboring toes.

Distal soft tissue realignment may be combined with an osteotomy. It involves alteration of the tissue in feet to help correct the deformity and stability improvement and appearance of the feet.

Arthrodesis means fusion of two bones in the big toe joint, which in  medical terms is called metatarsophalangeal joint.

It is only performed for severe deformities of the big toe joint, when fixing the joint is impossible, or in case of advanced degeneration.

Arthrodesis, is such a surgery which later on limits the use of high heels.

Excision Arthroplasty

It involves removal of the bunion and also the toe joint. After that, a false joint is created by scar tissue.

Pinning the joint in place with wires is done, which later on is removed after about three weeks.

An excision arthroplasty is usually reserved for severe, troublesome bunions in elderly people.
